A Recess in Time and Space

Russell Hausfeld

.

Somewhere and Everywhere, in a place eternal—

.

An entity glides forward as if reeled in by some unseen fisherman.

.

Sailing frictionless through a sea of celestial black, in which shapes both specific and abstract materialize in graytones, occasionally spliced with wild, flaming streaks of color.

.

The entity smiles within itself as it flies through the cosmos at speeds unimaginable.

.

For a moment, the omnipresent fisherman lets up on his line and the entity finds itself in stasis, surrounded by a swelling, breathing cavity which presses on forever in all directions.

.

The entity stretches out the essence of what were once fleshy palms, paws, and hooves in front of itself. So disconnected is the entity from Flesh, but the memory of it brings to light a rush of sensations.

.

Meaty palm caressing the skin of another creature’s neck during  heated lovemaking — feeling itself within these hands.

.

A strong pair of claws ripping the innards from the midsection of a horned beast.

.

Hooved feet galloping amidst a herd of other hooved animals, all in sync with each other.

.

A strange moment of self-reflection from this timeless and egoless being.

.

Then, the memories are gone.

.

They are left far behind the entity, which is now speeding forward once again, light years away from that brief recess in time and space.
